LAST Thursday's meeting of the full county council may have been a historic occasion, but it sure wasn't an exciting one.

The topics on the agenda were stern enough: altering the council's structure; increased pay for members; asylum-seekers.

But the speeches were so protracted I wasn't surprised to see Liberal Democrat veteran Diane Rayner pull out a newspaper and fill in the crossword, after three-and-a-half hours of guff.

The newspaper was The Guardian, naturally.
