MICHAEL Powell helped power Glamorgan Dragons to a record-breaking five-wicket win over Worcestershire Royals in the totesport League Division One match at New Road.

The 28-year-old hit 82 to lay the foundations for his side's formidable target of 274. Their previous highest successful run chase in the competition was 269 against Essex two years ago.

It was a splendid effort by Powell who was helped by Sourav Ganguly. The pair put on 110 in 18 overs.

Their efforts eclipsed a maiden limited over century by Stephen Moore for Worcestershire who have now lost their last four games in the league.

The 24-year-old cracked 104 to lift his side to 273-3 -- a tally which failed to stop Glamorgan from clinching a memorable win with an over to spare.

Worcestershire soon began to prosper after winning the toss -- a decision which led to them posting their highest limited over score of the season.

Skipper Vikram Solanki, in the side for the first time for six weeks due to England one-day commitments, and Moore confidently led the way with a 91-run opening standing in 15 overs.

Their double act ended when Solanki lofted Ganguly's first delivery to David Harrison at mid-off for 55 which included eight fours off 50 balls.

Moore however continued to blossom and along with Graeme Hick, the Johannesburg-born opener rarely looked in trouble against the Glamorgan attack until a mix-up led to the former England batsman being run out by Harrison for 42. They had put on 76 in 16 overs.

Moore and Zander de Bruyn then added 89 in 13 overs before Moore hoisted Alex Wharf to David Hemp on the mid-wicket boundary after notching eight fours off 123 balls.

De Bruyn was undefeated on 54, with two sixes and two fours off 41 balls, as Worcestershire fell just two runs short of their highest-ever league score against Glamorgan at Swansea in 1987.

Glamorgan, however, rose impressively to the challenge thanks to Powell whose knock included a six and eight fours off 90 balls, while Ganguly notched two sixes and five fours off 48 deliveries.

The Welsh side were then confidently eased to their third league victory of the season by Hemp with an undefeated 51 with one six and five fours.
