PLANS to redevelop Worcester's Gheluvelt Park could move a step closer following a meeting of city council leaders tonight.

The cabinet will be seeking approval for the submission of a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) bid and to authorise further consultation with the public.

Originally the Riverside Parks project was designed to provide a masterplan for the chain of public parks and open space from Cripplegate Park in St John's to Gheluvelt Park in Barbourne.

However, the HLF decided that only Gheluvelt Park met the criteria for funding.

The plan for the park includes a children's paddling pool, a feature explaining the Battle of Gheluvelt in 1914 during the First World War, a footbridge over Barbourne Brook, and a path alongside Barbourne Brook.

The report prepared for the meeting, due to take place at the Guildhall, says: "A final round of consultation with the public will be necessary before the submission of the bid.

"This scheme is capable of turning a good park into a superb park, of benefit to the local community and the whole of Worcester."
