THE new viaduct at Upton-upon-Severn was officially opened today, marking the completion of an award-winning project.

It was the final stage in a £3.5m rebuilding scheme that began after county engineers found major structural defects in the 66-year-old viaduct linking the bridge over the River Severn with the A4104.

The work started last July and involved building a temporary new road next to the old one to keep traffic flowing while the viaduct was dismantled and reconstructed.

The new viaduct beat 16 other West Midlands entrants to win the Institute of Civil Engineers Construction Award and Overall Award.

The chairman of Worcester County Council, Coun Derek Prodger, unveiled a plaque to commemorate the rebuilding of the viaduct.

"I am especially pleased that we were able to act so quickly and keep disruption to a minimum with the introduction of the temporary road, which was vital to Upton's businesses," he said.
