A TOP town museum re-opened a popular windmill for a national archaeology event.

The Danzey Green windmill at Avoncroft Museum, in Stoke Heath, was opened just for last weekend.

The 19th century post mill has been out of action since November 2004 when serious damage was found in both the stairway and the stocks. The museum was forced to remove the sails and close the windmill to the public for safety reasons.

But last weekend the windmill re-opened thanks to the hard work of a team of volunteers.

The opening was timed to coincide with National Archaeology Weekend where the past was brought to life at Avoncroft.

The 'trowel in time' event featured free activity workshops for all children where they could learn to dig up the past and re-construct broken artefacts.
