SCORES of curious Spa folk queued to be first to check out the town's new Waitrose store last Thursday.

The scalloped white roof, which has been criticised by some for not fitting in with the vernacular style, glittered in the summer sunshine as the eager shoppers checked out the new Saltway supermarket.

The store is leased from Wychavon District Council in a multi-million pound deal designed to regenerate the town centre.

Those first through the door were met by a mouth-watering range of fresh fish, meat, cheese, as well as an in-store bakery and patisserie, and a wide selection of wine.

Branch manager Caroline Dawson told her fellow workers: "This store has been five years in the planning and now we are fifteen minutes from opening. I hope you are all proud of what you have achieved over the past few days. Here's to Waitrose Droitwich!"
