NEXT month the talented young musicians of Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra present their annual spectacular evening of Big-band Swing music at Sudeley Castle, Winchcombe.

The audience is invited to bring their own picnic and enjoy an evening of foot-tapping music on Saturday, August 6, in the delightful surroundings of the castle.

The concert is scheduled to follow the band's annual concert tour in Devon where they are playing 11 concerts.

And the Journal has teamed up with the organisers to offer five readers the chance to win a pair of tickets and for three runners-up to win two CDs, Switch in Time and Bike Up the Strand.

This year will be the last concert for the band under the leadership of Tony Sheppard, who has run the band for 23 years.

Tony retired from his post as Head of Brass tuition for Gloucestershire Music Service last year, and is retiring from the Directorship of GYJO this year in order to concentrate on music writing and his own jazz performances.

Tony said: "We started with about a dozen players in 1982. Over the years, between three and four hundred young musicians have experienced the band, and we have played around 700 concerts."

"We are looking forward to the concert at Sudeley. There is always a great atmosphere. It should be really enjoyable performance."

GYJO is one of the bands and orchestras run under the auspices of the Gloucestershire Music Service for students from Gloucestershire Schools.
