SOUTH African Calvin Flowers made 155 off just 99 balls to help fire Ombersley to the top of the Crusader Worcestershire League.

Flowers, one of three centurions in Ombersley's 82-run victory over Bewdley, struck 19 fours and fives sixes to win our batsman of the week award.

His total formed a 266-run first-wicket partnership off 38 overs with Phil Burdon (112) as Ombersley declared on 347-3.

New Zealander Jonathan Boult did his best to claw Bewdley back into contention, his unbeaten 156 the mainstay of the visitors' 265 all out.

Flowers' ton put Ombersley in an unassailable position and on course for a maximum 24 points, but the 19-year-old believes it was the fielders who deserve the credit.

On a flat track favouring batsmen, Flowers said it was a case of which team could get the other out that would prevail.

He said: "It was our fielding that set up the game because we had two good catches and three run-outs.

"It's my highest score so it will be in the memory bank for a long time.

"It went well from ball one, it just hit the middle of the bat. It was a good innings."

Former Worcestershire Seconds star Flowers, who plays his home cricket in Durban, is currently enjoying his second season in England.

He added: "It's been a lot better than last year because I only made my runs in the second-half of last season.

Meanwhile, Eastnor Seconds medium-paced bowler Steve Large scooped the bowling award with an economical 8-44 in his side's victory against Droitwich Spa.

Large, 34, helped dismiss Droitwich for 113 before Eastnor swept to a six-wicket victory.

The haul was Large's best in his 20-year career, but it could have been even better had he not dropped a catch off his own bowling.

Large said: "The catch was for the fifth wicket when I was on four. The batsman drilled it back to me and I got my hands to it."

Large quickly put that disappointment behind him, though, to take his fifth wicket in the next over before taking three more.

He added: "I was really looking for five wickets because it would have been the first time I would have taken five at Eastnor's ground.

"It's definitely my best ever in the league. It's probably the best day in my cricketing life."
