Bretforton Silver Band is polishing its brass and practising for its very own Last Night of the Proms concert.

Now in its seventh year, the event has become one of the highlights of the year in the Vale of Evesham.

It started when the band held a free picnic in the park outdoor proms as a means of thanking local people for their support of the band for over 100 years. Spokesman Eleanor Wood said: "The band was amazed by the number who attended and they had a wonderful evening that members felt compelled to make the proms concert an annual event." This year the concert is on Saturday, July 23, in the Butty alongside Bretforton Royal British Legion with Mike George, of BBC Hereford & Worcester as compere for the evening. The programme will start with Bretforton Silver Band, conducted by John Wood, at 5.45pm, followed by the Billy Davis Band and then a performance from the John Wood Big Band, specially formed for the occasion, who will play music to reflect the 60th anniversary of the end of the war. Bretforton Silver Band will take to the stage again for the traditional part of the evening when the community singing will be led by Dave Turpitt and the event will end with a spectacular firework display at 10.30pm.

At midday the band will play at a service for the RBL's commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
