A VALE woman is claiming to be the first to introduce a new designer pet in the UK to animal lovers.

Gaynor Jean-Louis says she is the only toyger breeder in the country and hopes these animals - cats that look like tigers - become as commonly known as their counterparts.

Toygers were first bred in California by Judy Sudgen, who wanted to design a cat who held all the characteristics of a tiger.

Mrs Jean-Louis decided to follow in the footsteps of the American woman and contacted Judy Sudgen.

"Everyone dreams of owning a tiger or leopard when they are younger. I contacted Judy two years ago and started breeding these toygers since the beginning of this year. It is hard work but I enjoy it so much- they really are lovely animals," said Mrs Jean-Louis.

The 35-year-old works part time as an IT consultant in Redditch and dedicates the rest of her time looking after these animals.

Although the process of breeding toygers to look exactly like Bengal tigers is still many years away, the cat breeder remains positive about reaching the end goal.

Mrs Jean-Louis said: "These animals are very domesticated and intelligent animals. They are very much like cats but obvious features of a tiger. Going through the process of getting these animals to look like tigers is the end goal, it will take a few years but I'm sure we'll get there."

Mrs Jean- Louis is registered with TICA, an international organisation that recognises the work carried out by her.
