WE have recycled bottles, cans and papers for many years, and were grateful for the introduction of the recycling bins as it enabled us to include plastic as well.
I was, therefore, amazed to read in the Shuttle/Times & News last week that in future only plastic bottles will be acceptable and other items such as fruit punnets, food trays, although carrying the PET logo, will not be collected.
The reason for this appears to be cost, as too much time was being taken while the operatives examined these items to ensure they were acceptable.
The council has commended the community for exceeding the recycling target and wants more. As far as I can see , this new initiative will achieve two things.
More of our rubbish will end up in the wheelie bin, and those who were half-hearted already will probably give up altogether .
Where recycling is concerned, cost should not be an issue.
