WORK has begun on the refurbishment of the former police station on Evesham's Abbey Road, with the promise of more services for residents.
The work will see the Evesham Community Contact Centre extended in order to accommodate Jobcentre Plus. Jobcentre Plus services will add value to the current partnership which successfully provides council and police service under one roof.
The police will move into their new purpose-built station at the rear of the Contact Centre, which means building work can now start on the centre. It is hoped that the work will be completed by January 2006.
The centre currently provides residents with access to Wychavon District Council, Worcestershire County Council and Evesham Town Council services, along with those of West Mercia police.
Wychavon's democratic services manager, Amanda de Warr, said: "This is an exciting development. We had always planned to include additional services at the centre and the extension enables us to do that.
The work will cause some disruption at the centre and customers are being asked to be patient. Parking will be difficult at the centre and there is no parking at the rear of the building.
