A SECOND sundial put up by a Wyre Forest women's group to mark the millennium has been vandalised.

The ill-fated Townswomen's Guild project has now seen two sundials damaged and the third one has still not been unveiled - five years after the millennium date.

The Shuttle/Times & News reported last week that the sundial in the town's Brinton Park Memorial Gardens had twice had its top removed.

When Stourport Lickhill Evening Townswomen's Guild secretary, Wendy Steadman, read the story, she checked on the second one in memorial gardens near the Royal British Legion in Stourport and found the gnomon - the piece on top that casts a shadow - had been wrenched off.

"We know it was done deliberately because it was set into resin so it would not come off," Mrs Steadman said. "It's useless as it is now. It would cost a lot to replace, though, so I don't know what we'll do.

"We'll discuss it at our next meeting," she added.

She said the three groups had worked hard to raise the cash for the sundials in Kidderminster, Stourport and Bewdley, where doubts over the future of the museum have led to the unveiling being delayed until next month.

The sundial will be brought out of storage for a ceremony on Wednesday, August 17, to be called Millennium + 5.

"The museum is safe now and work to improve disabled access in the gardens has been completed," said Bewdley secretary, Maureen Golborne.

"It's terrible what has happened to the other two but we think ours will be safe in the museum gardens."
