THE Oughton family at Lower Rye Farm, Moreton, has creamed off the Dairy Herd Management competition organised by the Moreton Show Society for the fifth successive time.

"It is a remarkable achievement," said show secretary Tim Gardner, who added that the winners would be presented with the D H Pearman Memorial Trophy at the annual meeting of the society next January.

The Quality Milk Award for the District Milk Recording Society Butterdish Trophy was won by Robin Dale's herd at Manor Farm, Bourton-on-the-Hill.

The competition was judged by David Elliott, of Stratford NFU and resulted: 1 Messrs R H and M E Oughton & Sons, 2 Messrs H. Oughton & Son, Rectory Farm, Lower Swell, 3 Robin Dale, Bank Farm, Aston Magna.

Peter Lea, of Stratford NFU, had a hard task when he judged suckler herds. He said: "They were all of a very high standard."

The coveted Nancibel Gregory Memorial Trophy for the Best Flock of Sheep was won by Mr S L Keswick, of Rockcliffe, Upper Slaughter, who completed a double by taking the Henry Harrison Memorial Challenge Trophy for Commercial Rams.

"What a pleasure it was to judge the sheep," said David Hawkins, of Stratford NFU. "It was difficult comparing intensively grazed flocks with extensively grazed, comparing large commercial flocks with small pedigree flocks and to have an organic flock in the competition made it all the more interesting."

Best Commercial Rams: 1 S L Keswick, 2 Barrington Park Estate, 3 Capt W L Hannay.

Barrington Park Estate, managed by Adrian Dolby, of Great Barrington, won the Dr Ian Bewley Cathie Memorial Trophy, from T J Baldwyn, Lower Clopton Farm, Upper Quinton second and Messrs D C and R J Fisher, Manor Farm, Hampnett, Northleach, third.

Farmers in the winter sown oilseed rape competition were congratulated by the judge, Tim Longford, of Stratford NFU, on the very high standard of crops entered.
