THE parish council candidate caught up in a row over election advertising saw justice on Thursday when she beat three other contestants for a seat in Salford Priors.

Jane Corbett said she was angry and frustrated when she was told to take down more than 50 A4 posters days before the election.

But that turned to joy and delight on Thursday night when she learned she had polled 102 votes, putting her 10 votes ahead of her closest rival.

Little more than a quarter of villagers turned out to vote in the election, which was called following the death of Maureen Edmunds in May.

Of the 310 (26.08 per cent) who did vote, three votes were rejected.

Close contender Lynne Davies, who was also fighting her first election, said she was very happy about the result and wished Mrs Corbett success in her work on the council.

The votes where shared as follows: Jane Corbett 102, Lynne Davies 92, Reg Francis 47 and David Rogers 63.

Parish council chairman Kim James said: ''I'm extremely encouraged by the turnout for a by-election. This proves pro-active parish councils can attract good candidates and the public will turn out to vote.

''I look forward to welcoming Jane to the council and would like to personally thank the other three candidates for all their efforts in contesting this election.''
