YOUR article in Evening News July 11, referring to flashback picture described as a distance swim in the Severn is actually the annual cross- river swim for Worcester schoolboys.
The punt in the front of the picture shows its owner, Mr Webb, who was a very large man and a strict disciplinarian. He was the superintendent of the men's bathing barge, which floated in the Severn. My brother Teddy Mason won the race on three consecutive years. To start the race the boys lined up in the punt with Mr Webb balancing the punt.
The distance swim mentioned in your article was from Keepax Ferry to Worcester Grandstand a distance of one mile.
My brother was aged 15 years of age when he won it. I also swam in the race - I was three years younger than my brother and I arrived home last.
The date of this race was September, 1937 and was open to swimmers from a 30-mile radius of Worcester.
JOHN MASON,
Worcester.
