REDDITCH'S CCTV network is succeeding in securing the safety of the public, according to a Redditch councillor invited to see how it worked.

Conservative Councillor Juliet Brunner said she is now more reassured about the safety of people on town streets after the insight. She and party colleague Jack Field spent four hours at Redditch's CCTV control room - until 1.30am - to see how the system worked.

Mrs Brunner said she was impressed with the way information and images were shared between the relevant agencies and how many police she saw patrolling the streets through the evening.

"It was wonderful to see how smoothly everything functions and how hard all these people work to help keep Redditch people safe," she said.

"We were shown how the cameras themselves work and looked at the process by which police gather evidence from the CCTV footage. We saw a little bit of pushing and shoving taking place in the town centre but nothing major. This was probably because of the strong police presence.

"I am now far more reassured about safety in our town. When the other CCTV cameras are installed in the centre there will be absolutely excellent surveillance," added Mrs Brunner.

The control room is also used for the town's Lifeline system, for housebound and disabled people in the town. Mrs Brunner said she was delighted with how calls were handled.
