ON July 16 and 17 Absolute Beginners, Alcester Grammar School's student drama group, produced As You Like It by William Shakespeare.

It's said that God favours the brave and certainly this was the case with this play, as the group had to overcome many difficulties. Undaunted, the group soldiered on under the leadership of Ken Ross (Year 13) and decided on an outdoor performance of As You Like It in the Forest of Arden (otherwise known as the Maths Courtyard). Fortunately, the sun shone on both evenings and the audience were treated to a superb performance complete with strawberries and cream.

Ken Ross's production contained many funny moments and was clear enough for non-Shakespeare fans to understand. The four pairs of lovers were well matched with special mention to Catherine Hazell (Rosalind) and Tessa Stanway (Celia) who complemented each other to perfection. Sophie Danks was outstanding as Phoebe, playing the part as "Essex Girl" to the amusement of the audience. The lively production was full of dancing choreographed by Tessa Stanway and musical renditions with which the audience joined in. The stage crew managed the lighting and sound effects to perfection in the outdoor arena.

It was a joy to watch the students put such enthusiasm and vitality into the performance. Having survived such a difficult year, I am sure they will go from strength to strength.
