AN appeal has been launched to find more school crossing patrols in Bromsgrove.

Only one out of every three sites which needs a patrol in the district has someone in the post.

Now Worcestershire County Council is appealing for anyone with five to eight hours spare a week to help make children's walks to school much safer.

County councillor Peter McDonald (Lab-Beacon) said: "It is essential that these positions are filled, as they play an important role in making the walk to school safer.

"In Rubery, there are a number of very busy roads and dangerous crossings, so I'd implore as many people as possible to come forward. The role is very well respected and pupils always look up to their lollipop men and ladies."

Cllr Anthony Blagg (Con-Bromsgrove Central) said that in the past there had been people queuing up to apply for school crossing posts.

He added: "Now is an ideal time to come forward as we can have people in place ready for when the new school year begins again in September."

Working hours are during term time and centred around times when children are walking to and from school, although some sites require lunchtime shifts.

Full training is provided and all patrols are issued with a protective uniform and their own genuine lollipop. All applicants have an initial medical, which is repeated annually for anyone over 65. For more details contact Tina Green on 01905 766826.
