A lifelong pigeon fancier is offering a cash reward for the return of "priceless" birds taken from his home in a night-time raid.

Chris Casey, aged 52, gave chase when he disturbed intruders raiding the pigeon loft at his Redhill Lane, Rubery, home. He was unable to catch the offenders, who made off with racing and roller pigeons valued at more than £1,400.

"I am angry and disgusted - they have taken something that I really held dear," said Mr Casey, a member of the Longbridge Flying Club."The racer pigeons were a hobby but the rollers were my pride and joy. They are priceless to me. I think the thieves knew what they were looking for."

The thieves took 40 racing pigeons valued at around £25 each and 70 roller pigeons valued between £400 and £500 in total, which are judged on their ability to role from the sky. The birds were taken using baskets from the loft along with other garden tools.

"I have had roller pigeons since I was a boy, and my son who has just started taking up the hobby is also devastated," added Mr Casey, who is now offering a £100 reward for information leading to the return of the birds.

A police spokesman added: "We are investigating the incident and would appeal for anyone with information to call Bromsgrove police on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."
