BRAVE little Holly Lindsay is fighting fit just days after having a special helmet, which re-shaped her head, removed.

The eight-month-old baby, from Pavilion Gardens, Bromsgrove, wore the plastic helmet 23 hours a day for eight weeks to correct a flattening on the left side of her head, a condition called positional plagiocephaly.

First-time parents, Fiona and Ian, originally noticed a problem when Holly was just six-weeks-old. Fiona mentioned it to her GP during a routine check but he said it would correct itself as Holly got older.

After several other appointments the parents were still not happy. Fiona said: "When Holly was 17-weeks-old the flattening was quite pronounced and her left ear was further forward than the right. We were not convinced it would correct itself over time and didn't want to take any risks."

Then on a trip to Holland Fiona's mum heard about a treatment for the condition. The parents searched the internet and found out about the helmet.

At a private clinic in Leeds - run by Medistox Ltd, which is the leading UK supplier of the custom-made remoulding devices, a specialist measured Holly's head and discovered it was 16mm out of alignment. The normal is about two to three mm.

A scan was taken of her head and the band was custom-made, complete with pretty pink butterflies on it, in America. This helmet allowed the head to grow with greater symmetry and improved shape.

Fiona said: "Holly was fantastic at wearing the band. It had a plastic outside and a dense foam inner which was cut away and remoulded each time we went for a check-up and Holly's head had grown.

"She had to wear it 23 hours a day and we only took it off to give her a wash or bath. The only problem was when it was hot and we had to keep taking it off and sponging her head to keep her cool."

Last week a specialist announced Holly's head alignment was down to 3mm so the helmet could be removed.

Delighted Fiona said: "Holly's head will now fill out naturally. She was so well behaved while wearing it and carried on as normal. We are really pleased we took action to help her."
