YOUR photograph (Wednesday, July 20) is of a locomotive on the privately-owned Hill Evans vinegar works line which ran from Shrub Hill goods yard, through Heenan and Froudes Works down to Lowesmoor.
Where it crossed roads, traffic was controlled by a signal facing both rail and road traffic. This was made by the famous Worcester company Mackenzie and Holland who signalled the world's railways.
Unfortunately, in the post war years, this was sometimes ignored by motorists, leading to interesting bumps for the insurance claims, and a man with a flag was substituted.
