FORGET London's 2012 Olympic joy - Glasgow was the place to be this month to see the Olympic spirit at its very best.

The Scottish city hosted the 2005 Special Olympics National Summer Games and it was a record-breaking event for the Redditch athletes taking part.

Local organisers Ron and Elaine Daykin took a group of 15 as part of a West Midlands contingent of 400 to the event and they returned with their best ever haul - a total of 20 medals.

The Games opened with a ceremony at Celtic Park, with Texas and Lucie Silvas among the artists performing in front of a crowd of 20,000.

The actual events were spread across Glasgow with a number taking take at the renowned Kelvin Hall.

And that was where much of the Redditch success came with winning performances in both gymnastics and basketball.

There were two golds among the nine gymnastics medals, Christopher Finch claiming them both, while the basketball teams claimed a gold and silver - Richard Daykin, Emmeline Rudge and Steven Cooper playing their part.

The other four gold medals came in the football with the Redditch quartet of Robert Page, Robert Laight, Matthew Page and Daniel McFadden helping the West Midlands side to glory.

Medals were also won in the swimming and athletics.

With the Games held every four years, Redditch's Special Olympians must now wait until 2009 to see if they can better the medal tally.
