BIDFORD is gearing up for a major music event which, it is hoped, will raise thousands of pounds to fund the fight against a proposed sand and gravel pit on the edge of the village.

Members of Bidford-on-Avon Residents Group (BARG) and other volunteers are staging Bidfest '05 on Big Meadow on Saturday September 10.

The five-hour extravaganza will feature four bands as well as comedians, poets and local celebrities.

Organisers have been given permission from Bidford Parish Council to use Big Meadow and now have to work quickly to get all the necessary licences.

Local police, firefighters and medical volunteers have all agreed to support the event.

Peter French reported to the parish council that BARG has gathered more than 4,000 objectors and a substantial amount of data for their case against RMC which runs Marsh Farm Quarry and wants to extend it.

But, they say, the cost of consultation and legal teams will be tens of thousands of pounds.

Any funds left over from Bidfest have been pledged to the parish council.
