THE safety checks in Kidderminster Cemetery have come under fire from a district councillor who says they have caused "considerable misery and distress".
Liberal group leader, Mike Oborski, was told at a full meeting of Wyre Forest District Council on Wednesday last week that the inspections, which have cost £16,000, identified 841 of the 6,400 gravestones as unsafe.
Mr Oborski said: "The whole process has caused considerable misery and distress for many relatives. The whole business is political correctness gone mad. This is an unusual example when the solution is, in reality, the chief cause of the problem."
He added that he was "deeply disappointed that the council are not prepared to look for a better way of handling the matter and remain totally complacent, despite the upset caused to so many families and relatives."
