A NOTORIOUS Kidderminster eyesore is to appear on national television after being branded "one of the worst buildings in Britain".

Crown House will feature with 11 others on the Channel Four show, Demolition, after being picked out of 7,000 nominated structures.

Filming for the programme, which will be aired in the autumn, took place at the town centre building on Tuesday.

The land on which it stands in owned by Wyre Forest District Council but Land Securities Trillium has held a 70-year lease since 1998.

The building, which houses the post office and civil service staff, led to the CATCH - The Campaign Against The Crown House - protest group being formed in 2000.

Group member, Ken Evans, who previously bought shares in the company which owns the lease to raise the issue, said: "The building is an example of bad architecture and is not in keeping with the new regenerated town centre.

"I hope that this programme will lead to an improvement."

It is the latest in the line of dubious distinctions it has received after previously being voted the ugliest in the West Midlands.

Councillor Mike Oborski said: "I think it deserves all the criticism that it gets. It's a disgrace and the owners should be ashamed of themselves."

Despite the title of the programme, a Channel Four spokesman said that it was "almost certain" that the winner of the worst building title would not be demolished but they hope it will "highlight and encourage" future action.

A spokeswoman for Land Securities Trillium said: "We are exploring a feasibility scheme to improve this multi-tenanted building, together with the local authority that owns the freehold of the property, as well as the occupiers."
