MOURNERS donated more than £150 to Operation Covert in memory of a beloved grandfather.

Friends and family of Gerald Strange pledged £160 in lieu of flowers to our appeal at a service at Stourbridge Crematorium. Mr Strange died last month aged 82.

His son, Brian, said: "We thought we should do something that will give a lasting memory so we asked for donations to go to the Rhydd Covert appeal."

He explained his father took a keen interest in his family's involvement with the Scouting movement.

Grandson Ben, nine, is a member of KD11 Harkaway Scouts in Broadwaters, Kidderminster and granddaughter, Charity, was in the Brownies.

Mr Strange said: "He was retired and really, I suppose, the grandchildren kept him young, to a degree."

It is the second time Operation Covert has been chosen by family members to receive donations in lieu of flowers.

More than £3,000 was given to the appeal by friends and family of Suzanne Smith, a 36-year-old Bewdley woman who died after her car was swept away while crossing a swollen ford at Cleobury Mortimer in October.

About 400 people from the UK and overseas attended the service, at Holy Trinity Church, Far Forest in November.
