I WISH to point out, for the sake of accuracy, that it is the pillory, not the stocks, which trapped Corrina Lewis, the sports officer pictured in the Shuttle/Times & News on June 23.
The pillory was designed for head and arms, the stocks for the legs, and sometimes hands, too.
Despite its carnival appeal today, the pillory as a punishment could be deadly. Indeed there were cases of people trapped and defenceless, being horribly injured or even killed by enraged mobs.
