WORRIES about the speed of traffic passing through the village of Holt Fleet have not gone away, despite assurances that new speed limits have slowed motor-ists down.

Residents Paul and Kelly Lyons have asked for speed monitoring to be carried out again, saying that previous results, showing an average speed of 36mph, do not reflect the experience of residents and visitors.

The last monitoring was carried out in May last year, after the limit had been reduced from 50 to 40mph.

Results were compared with speeds recorded on four previous dates, one in 1999, two in 2000 and one in 2002. Sally Everest, of Wych-avon Highways Part-nership, said detection loops measured the speed of all vehicles, 24 hours per day, between May 22 and 29.

"We measured the speed of west-bound traffic just after entering the speed limit, where it was going downhill, so that speeds would be a lot faster," she said.

"The average speed was 36mph and 85 per cent of the traffic was travelling at or below 43mph. From these initial results we were satisfied that the reduction in speed limit had had the required effect." Mr and Mrs Lyons suggest the May tests may have been carried out during the spring break for schools, when traffic was different from normal.

They have asked for the monitoring to be repeated as soon as possible, and this time, they would like to know how many readings are taken, together with details of the minimum and maximum speeds recorded.
