PEOPLE who have always fancied being part of a theatre production will now have the opportunity to do so in one performance - thanks to the interactive show HMS Pinafore From Scratch.

London Operetta will be presenting its famous Gilbert and Sullivan performance of HMS Pinafore, as part of the Worcester Festival.

The show has lots of audience participation where people sing and play the roles of daughters, jurymen, bridesmaids, sisters, cousins, aunts, policemen, pirates and sailors among other colourful characters.

There will also be singing from the company's soloists during the second half of the show.

In the first part, musical director, Ian McMillan, rehearses the audience in their character roles.

The audience then has the opportunity to sing along with the soloists during the second half.

"People of all ages come along," says Ian.

"During the first half they rehearse with me with a piano, then we take the show onto the deck of HMS Pinafore.

"I teach the audience musical notes, then get them into their character roles, and help them develop their characters.

In the second half, the audience is joined by the company's cast of professional singers, all from national opera companies, including the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, Carl Rosa, Glyndebourne, ENO, Scottish Opera and Opera North.

"In the second half, the audience come back and I do a condensed version of the full opera with the professional soloists in full costumes," says Ian.

"People mustn't be put off by the singing because they haven't got to learn lots of complicated music."

HMS Pinafore From Scratch will be performed at Huntingdon Hall, CrownGate, Worcester, on Friday, August 27, at 7.30pm.

All tickets are £12.50 including a programme/score.
