MEMBERS of the Redditch branch of the Parachute Regimental Association will be travelling to France thanks to the Big Lottery Fund to commemorate those who died in the Second World War.

The 48-strong group will travel to Normandy on September 8 and meet up with members of the Parachutiste Amicale Vitry Le Francois in the heart of the Champagne region.

The four-day trip will see both groups lay wreaths and visit the battlefields of Normandy.

Redditch branch secretary Barry Tansley, said: "Although it will be an enjoyable experience where we will no doubt sample the region's Champagne, it will also be a very moving time as we remember those who did not survive the war.

"We're very grateful to the Big Lottery Fund's Heroes Return scheme which is making it possible and also to Redditch Council, which originally told us about the fund."

Two years ago, members of Parachutiste Amicale Vitry Le Francois came to Redditch and joined in a service at the town's war memorial.

The group also accepted a statuette of Pegasus sponsored by the Redditch Advertiser.
