GUESTS at an engagement party in Redditch enjoyed a taste of the exotic when the groom-to-be performed an astonishing Fijian fire-dance.

Mekatoa Pieri dazzled spectators at the garden party in Marshfield Close, Church Hill, as he juggled with fire to traditional Fijian music.

The 21-year-old native Polynesian met his bride-to-be, Jodie Ingram, on Robinson Crusoe Island when she was travelling around Australia and the Far East.

The tropical South Pacific isle is known as "Island of Firedancers" and here Mekatoa also performed a knifedance with a machete.

The dance is performed in a sarong known as a sulu with striking black face paints.

Miss Ingram said: "The performers on Robinson Crusoe island are known very well around Fiji and people come from all over the world to see them."

Just over a year after they first met, Mr Pieri is now living and working in Redditch and looking forward to his wedding to Miss Ingram, 22, next year.

In the future, Mr Pieri hopes to perform his fire and knife dancing routines at other parties and weddings.
