DROITWICH Spa lido has been included in a book which charts the development and use of such facilities across the country.

Liquid Assets: The Lidos and Open Air Swimming Pools of Britain traces the history of many lidos, from their predecessors in the 18th and 19th centuries through their high popularity in the 1930s, and finally to the situation today.

The book features pictures of the troubled Worcester Road site - one of the few brine water pools to have operated in inland Britain - and charts its history from its opening on June 10, 1935, to its closure in 2000.

The book also gives mention to the on-going campaign to get the site re-opened and put back to its original state by members of SALT (Save a Lido Today).

SALT is currently fighting Wychavon District Council's proposal to transform the site to have a fun pool, wet play area and caf.

The book also features a foreword from artist Tracey Emin, famous for her Turner nominated work which featured her un-made bed.

She writes: "The thought of lidos brings back memories of being happy as a child. We should not be closing lidos. We should be saving them and building more. We have to remind everyone of how important and wonderful lidos are."

SALT chairman Linda Watkins said: "The book goes into some detail on the history of Droitwich Spa lido and our campaign for it to be re-opened.

"It is comforting to read that other lidos have shared the same misfortune as Droitwich Spa, but have risen from the ashes to become once more an up and coming feature of their towns."

Liquid Assets: The Lidos and Open Air Swimming Pools of Britain, by Janet Smith, is priced at £14.99.
