Dr D Simones Jones has been commenting in the local press about the need for housing in Bromsgrove.
Almost four years ago now my husband and I parted. I was living at that time in the family home which was a three bedroom semi with my youngest daughter.
I was informed by Bromsgrove District Council that I was under-occupying the property and would have to exchange to a small property or risk eviction. Luckily I managed to exchange.
One of my daughters is at present living in a second floor two bedroom flat with two small children and because the children are very light sleepers my daughter and her husband sleep on a mattress on the living room floor so that the children (a boy and a girl) can have a room each, enabling everyone to get a decent nights sleep.
My point to this letter is, I know of, in one road alone on the Rockhill estate, four properties that are underoccupied and countless other properties on other estates. If I was told I had no choice but to move house so that a family can have my home, why is this not the case for everyone?
My daughter and son-in-law have been told that unless they can find an exchange (not many people want to exchange from a three bedroom house to a two bedroom flat) they must wait until the eldest child is eight years old before they can be re-housed (at the moment she is three).
I'm afraid I feel the council has to decide if it has the same rule for everyone (ie: under-occupancy - your out) or preferential treatment for certain people.
