AVONCROFT took full advantage of the rain to close in on Worcester League Division Three leaders Lye on Saturday.

The seven-wicket victory over Worcester Dominies and Lye's abandoned match against Old Vigornians means that 'Croft are just a point behind the pacesetters.

'Croft's game against former bogey side Worcester was the only match to go ahead in Division Three because of torrential rain.

The weather forced the match to 35 overs for each side. Captain Paul Athey won the toss and decided to put Worcester into bat.

Dave James (2-28) got his side off to a flying start when he dismissed Gwynne (10).

The bowler also dismissed opener Miles (3), while Nick Riley (1-20) removed Stokes as Worcester collapsed to 30-3.

G Wilkes (42) led Worcester's fight back, before Jon Crowther (4-47) had him caught by Bird on the boundary.

Avoncroft began to turn the screw, with Athey (3-20) removing Price (10) and Crothwer dismissing I Wilkes (18), as Worcester were all out for 125.

Croft's reply made a stuttering start on a damp wicket, which was beginning to move around.

Ali bowled Doodey (1), but Nick Passant hit a patient 24 and forged a 101 run partnership with James - who hit 69.

Hill then removed both batsmen, but they had guided Avoncroft within inches of crossing the victory line.

Bird (eight not out) then hit the runs to ensure 'Croft's victory.

l 'Croft start their crucial end of season run in on Saturday when they go to Enville (1pm start).

With the top two locked in a title battle 'Croft can't afford to drop any points.

'Croft also have to play Feckenham away and Old Vigornians at home.

Lye take on Oldswinford, Stourport and Worcester Dominies.
