I READ John Phillpott's Seven Days column (Saturday, August 6) and I was intrigued by some of his comments, namely the seagull saga and the Asian community in Worcester.

I believe it was the Worcester News, who two months ago initiated the seagull menace as front-page news.

The paper then followed up the story by further articles and encouraged readers to express their views by phoning or writing to the newspaper.

The seagulls are only here because the picking is good, a symptom of our wasteful and careless society. If society behaves more responsibly, the seagulls will inevitably move out.

As for the Asian community, how does Mr Phillpott propose British Muslims should make their loyalty to this country and institutions more conspicuous? Perhaps they should give up their Islamic faith, become secular, start eating pork and support England at cricket.

In view of the racial prejudice displayed by the lighter-skinned drunks, towards the taxi drivers and restaurant staff cited at the end of his column, I do not see why British-born, law abiding Muslims should be doing anything to prove themselves.

People in glasshouses should not throw stones and we really need to be rid of this conspicuous racial prejudice first, before we expect British Muslims to integrate fully with a predominantly secular society.
