FURIOUS residents in a hamlet near Inkberrow have pledged to fight "tooth and nail" against plans to create a permanent site for travelling performers.

People living in Holberrow Green have launched a campaign opposed to the development of a six-acre field, which runs between Astwood Bank and Inkberrow and borders Morton Hall Lane.

Countryman Fairs of Inkberrow has lodged an application with Wychavon District Council to turn the site into a permanent base for at least 15 show families, heavy goods vehicles and fairground equipment.

Resident Roger Fleury, who has launched the Holberrow Green Action Group (HGAG), said: "Everyone is stunned by this application. The site is totally inappropriate and the plans would have a devastating impact on the rural character of our hamlet and the Worcestershire countryside.

"If it was a normal residential development it would not be allowed."

Mr Fleury said campaigners were also concerned about the increase in traffic and accidents the development might cause.

"The showpeople's lorries and trailers would also add to traffic problems in neighbouring areas such as Astwood Bank and the Edgioake crossroads - this is a notorious accident blackspot less than a mile from the site," he added.

Residents in surrounding villages are also backing the campaign, with more than 200 people turning out to a meeting on August 12.

Now they are urged to help fight the proposal by logging their objections on the Wychavon council website by tomorrow. For more details visit www.wychavon.gov.uk
