A 31-year-old man with a fear of enclosed spaces wept in the dock at Worcester Crown Court as he was jailed for six months for taking ecstasy tablets into a Redditch nightclub.

Shaun Morris, who was suffering from depression at the time, planned to use two tablets himself and share the rest with friends.

But police alerted by doormen at Time Nightclub in Church Road, arrested Morris and found six and a half tablets on him, said Adam Western, prosecuting.

Morris, of Auxerre Avenue, Greenlands, pleaded guilty to possession of ecstasy with intent to supply.

The bricklayer was caught around 1am on March 5 and confessed to police he had bought ten tablets from a stranger.

His barrister Mark Wall said the father-of-two had a phobia of confined spaces and would find jail hard to bear.

Morris had no previous convictions and, despite a nervous disposition and a lack of confidence, had battled to lead a normal life. He had worked in the building trade since the age of 15.

Mr Wall said a lack of access to his children by his first wife had led to depression, resulting in alcohol and ecstasy consumption.

But access had now been granted and he was in the process of moving to a new house wth his new partner.

Judge Andrew Geddes said the court had to send out a clear message to others who might be tempted by drug crime.

Under Court of Appeal guidlines, jail was inevitable for such an offence, but sentences for ecstasy were "less draconian" than they were in the 1990s, the judge added.
