ANY woman who has been helplessly abandoned for a game of football will sympathise with Drew Barrymore's character in The Perfect Catch.

The premise is simple - boy meets girl and they fall in love but unfortunately for girl, boy loves sport more - in this case The Boston Red Sox baseball team.

And yes, it is a familiar storyline - a film version of Nick Hornby's novel Fever Pitch about Arsenal football team and starring Colin Firth and Joely Richardson was released in 1996.

In the US, The Perfect Catch was in fact named Fever Pitch, but was changed for the UK market to avoid confusion.

The joy of this film is that the sport is actually irrelevant, which is a good thing since I know about as much about baseball as I do football, or any other sport for that matter.

What is relevant is the excellent on-screen chemistry between Barrymore and her co-star Jimmy Fallon, which could not fail to delight.

But can their love survive the greatest season in Red Sox history?

Yes, it's predictable, and no, it's not one to take your man to but with the football season now in full flight, The Perfect Catch is one way to spend those dreaded 90 minutes.
