TWO men were seriously injured in a head-on car smash on the road to Hadley on Monday, at about 10.20am.

A young man, in his 20s, lost control of his blue Renault Kangoo van after hitting a massive diesel spillage in the pouring rain on the A4133.

He told Spa firefighters, who were first to the scene, that his vehicle lost all grip with the road and hit an on-coming silver Ford Fiesta Finesse, which was going towards Droitwich Spa.

An older man, in his 70s, who was driving the Ford car, suffered a punctured lung. The younger man suffered a hip injury.

Neither of the men havebeen named.

Two ambulances took the casualties to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

The road was blocked for about three and a half-hours while the wreckage was cleaned up.

Dumped

Leading firefighter Kevin Harris, from Droitwich Spa's Saltway fire station, said: "As we went round the Ombersley island, leaving Droitwich, we noticed there was a lot of diesel on the road so we contacted the police. It seemed as if a lorry had dumped a lot of fuel."

The windy country road, which has a speed limit of 60mph, narrows just before the turning for Hadley, and that is where the crash occurred.

Kevin added: "As the van went round the corner it would have been like it was on glass, with the diesel and the rain on the road.

"The young man told us his van just span and span and he had no control over it."

Now police are looking for witnesses to the crash to help them piece together how the diesel was spilt and how exactly the crash occurred.

Members of the public who are able to offer information concerning either the collision itself or the diesel spillage are asked to contact PC Mark Simpson on 08457 444888 quoting reference 64C/220805.
