IT was important to register our first league win of the season -- now we must try for back-to-back victories at Workington on Saturday.

We thoroughly deserved to beat Gainsborough Trinity at St George's Lane, but there are still areas where we can improve.

We created lots of chances in both halves and managed more shots on target than in the previous two games. But there were opportunities that should have been put away.

Barry Woolley missed a free header, Nick Colley had two great opportunities and Adam Webster, who rarely misses the target, failed to take his best chance.

We did score twice, but there may be times when we need to finish off those other chances.

I was pleased for Chris Smith and Graham Hyde with their goals. The first goal is important and Smithy reacted well to score following a great clearance off the line.

That was just reward because it resulted from a set-piece and we've worked hard on them in training.

Les Hines delivered some very good set-pieces and they caused huge problems for Gainsborough.

Hydey scuffed his shot for our second goal, but it had quality about it. When the ball comes to you at the edge of the box, it's important not to rush things.

He took the ball down on his chest first and took his time. It was a goal that we needed and there should have been more in the second-half.

Several players that have not played too much first team football also got a run-out with the reserve side against Burton Albion on Monday night

Those recently sitting on the bench -- Shabir Khan, Jimmi-Lee Jones, Danny Hodnett, Tom Warmer and Lewis Skyers -- got 90 minutes and it keeps them ticking over.

Unfortunately, George Clegg could not play because of work commitments. There's nothing that we can do about that. Had he been involved, he would have been spot-on for Saturday.

Jai Stanley also got a run-out in midfield, as much for confidence as well as fitness. He knows he has slipped a little behind his own standards and Jai wanted to be out on the pitch again.

I don't think we have another Central Conference reserve fixture for three weeks, so it was important that everybody who needed and wanted a game got one.

These lads need games like this, because if they get an opportunity to play on Saturday, they must be ready fitness-wise.

Hopefully, we should not travel to Workington with any injury worries, although three or four players have not been 100 per cent fit.

Les is still recovering from a broken nose, Webby is not fully over his knee problem and Chris Smith and Leon Kelly had dead legs. It was a credit to those lads to go out there against Gainsborough.

It will be another big test at Workington. I don't know a great deal about them, although we'll have them watched.

I played at their ground last season when my former club Carlisle took on Redditch United in the FA Trophy. The tie was shifted after Carlisle's ground was flooded.

It was difficult to play on be-cause there was another downpour and the pitch was boggy and heavy. I'm sure early in the season, it will not be too bad.
