COUNTY Seniors captain Les Carter helped Glouces-tershire through the south west preliminary round of this year's EGU Southern Regional Seniors Foursomes competition.

The Broadway man and John Hindshaw halved their match as the county overcame old rivals Somerset and Carter was again only able to add another half a point in a 4-1 defeat of Dorset in the afternoon's action at Minchinhampton.

However, Carter's failure to record a win failed to hinder Gloucestershire's progress but the Cotswolds player, in his second season as captain, will be hoping for better fortunes at North Wiltshire GC on Octo-ber 20 when Kent and Norfolk are the only known opponents so far.

Meanwhile, three of the club's younger players were selected to represent Glouces-tershire Under-18s in yesterday's Channel League match against Gwent at Monmouth.

Peter Steadman, Ed Kennedy and Chris O'Hagan were set to be in action but all three will be missing for Sunday's final match against Glamorgan due to the English County Finals at Little Aston.
