IS there a plan by Bromsgrove District Council to either imprison or ban all drivers who make the mistake of driving almost anywhere in Bromsgrove along the new cycle lanes? These have been created by the painting of little white cycles, that obviously extend to the middle of the road as there is no dividing line.

I include sections taken from the Highway Code in support. If the town-planning department do not have a copy I will be more than willing to buy them one.

Many of the rules in the code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence.

You may be fined, given penalty points on your licence or be disqualified from driving. In the most serious cases you may be sent to prison.

Such rules are identified by the use of the words MUST/MUST NOT. In addition the rule includes an abbreviated reference to the legislation which creates the offence.

119: Cycle lanes. These are shown by road markings and signs. You MUST NOT drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a solid white line during its times of operation. Do not drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a broken white line unless it is unavoidable. You MUST NOT park in any cycle lane whilst waiting restrictions apply.

Law RTRA sects 5 & 8

49: Cycle Lanes. These are marked by a white line (which may be broken) along the carriageway (see Rule 119). Keep within the lane wherever possible.

50: You MUST obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals. Laws RTA 1988 sect 36, TSRGD reg 10(1)
