YOUNGSTERS from Evesham progressed to finals day of the Midlands Under-16s competition after recording a fine nine-run victory over Wombourne on Monday night.
After electing to bat first on a slightly damp wicket, Evesham got off to a quick start thanks to Marcus Humpston's quickfire 26.
Wombourne fielded superbly and took wickets at regular intervals. However, captain Henry Newman made an assured 36 as Evesham finished on 110-7 off their 20 overs.
Openers Quiney and Hughes ran superbly between the wickets and an away victory looked likely until the introduction of medium-pacer Andrew Fisher whose variety of slower balls confused the batsman.
Good Evesham catching backed up the bowlers up as the visitors put themselves under pressure needing 35 off five overs in the fading light.
Newman's off-spin added to Wombourne's problems as they failed to deny Eve-sham a date in the finals.
Fisher took 4-21 and New-man 2-5 to leave the winners to play alongside three more sides at at Harborne CC next Tuesday.
