STAFF and friends at the Greig Memorial Hall in Alcester have launched a self-help campaign to counter criticism over the state of the building.

They are aiming to raise more than £20,000 towards refurbishment of the original hall, which is in need of new toilets and a kitchen, in the hope it will be match funded by Advantage Alcester.

The campaign has the backing of the Marquess of Hertford, who has agreed to be patron.

Greig Centre trustees have more than £1 million to spend on turning the sports hall into a multi-purpose community venue, but were criticised for neglecting the old hall.

Steve Richford, whose over-30s nights were cancelled last year because of lack of support, has challenged the critics to help him do something about it.

He has organised a Greig benefit night, featuring bands and entertainment.

He said: "We're trying to get the community motivated to do something.

"If we can get people out every single night pushing carts and watering flowers for weeks and weeks then I'm sure we can get them to support this.

"The Greig was built for the people of Alcester and it's time for the people to put something back.

"We want companies to sponsor tables for this event and individuals to buy tickets, and if people are not prepared to do that then they should not moan about the state of the hall."

Centre manager Stacy Robinson said: "This is self help. We recognise customer complaints and can't afford to do anything about it out of the trust's coffers, so we are trying to raise the money and urge people to support us."

The Greig Benefit Night, on Saturday September 24, features comedian Edd Hammill as compere, tribute band The Bowie Contingent, Nigel Clark (formerly of Dodgy), The Texan Peacocks and Jay's Disco.

Tickets cost £10 in advance, £12 on the door, and are available from the Greig Centre on 01789 400073.

There will be a raffle during the evening, with prizes ranging from a year's family membership of Bizzy Bodies health studio to a children's party.

Lord Hertford, who will be attending and handing out prizes, said: "The Greig Centre has been at the heart of community facilities in the town for a long time.

"It's had its ups and downs, but who hasn't over the course of 50 years?"

l The White Lion in Henley Street is hosting a Race Night on Saturday September 3 to raise funds for the Greig Hall. Sponsorship of races by local businesses would be be welcomed, as well as support on the night.
