IN response to E Walter Carr's previous letter, Alan Cure considered him ignorant and contemptuous of Britain.

For such a wild claim to be proven, Mr Cure will have to ignore several historical facts such as England's treatment of her Celtic neighbours and the 60 million African slaves shipped to work on the colonial plantations in the Americas.

Britain set up concentration camps in South Africa during the Boer War and transported British convicts to the penal colonies in Australia. There was also the 1919 Amritsar massacre in India and the creating of the state of Israel on Palestinian land.

Yes, Britain did exploit and plunder her colonies and it only gave them their independence when Britain could no longer sustain her empire. Britain would not have had the empire in the first place, if it merely acted like lady bountiful to her colonies, as inferred by Mr Cure.

As for today's generation - whoever they may be - some of us are prepared to enlighten ourselves by also listening to and reading about opposing views of history and hopefully draw a more balanced conclusion.
