WORCESTER Canoe Club hosted more than 800 racers in the National Canoe and Kayak Marathon Racing Championships on the River Severn.

And they finished third overall out of 30 clubs with victories for Simon Davies and Mike Hawthorn in the over 44 K2 class and James Parker and Chris Skellern in the over 54 K2 class.

The event, which attracted entries from top international paddlers from Holland and Ireland, saw paddlers race over distances up to 26km.

It included assessment races for selection for the Great Britain team to take part in the World Championships in Perth, Australia, next month.

The U10 and U12 paddlers were beaten into second place by Banbury for the fiercely-contested club trophy. Dutch star paddler Edwin DeNijs snatched victory in the 26km senior men's race, but it was multiple world champion Ivan Lawler from Weybridge who took the National Championship crown with second spot.

Trish Davey won the ladies' K1 race, while Lawler teamed up with young junior world champion Ben Brown to take the men's K2 event.

Worcester's Steph Holmes and Laura Ferguson finished second in the U14 ladies' K2 and Holmes was runner-up in the K1 class.

Sue Hawthorn was second in the over 34 ladies' K1, while James Rawlings was runner-up in the Division Seven K1 class.
