WYRE Forest residents wanting to get in touch with social services for the first time will now have to contact a Worcester-based central contact point.

The new Access Centre system is intended to help people find their way through the maze of Worcestershire County Council's social services.

Previous telephone and fax numbers, such as those relating to Wyre Forest, have closed.

Since the new service was launched late last month, it has been receiving, on average, about 150 calls a day.

Andrew Morley, Access Centre manager, said: "The opening was a great success. There were some initial teething problems, which are to be expected with a change of this scale, but these were fairly minor and were resolved as they occurred.

"The aim of the service is to provide a clear, consistent route for customers requiring our service and the feedback received so far has been very encouraging."

Jo Hemming, who played a part in the changeover, said: "We realise that contacting social services for the first time can be quite daunting so we have set up this single point of contact."
