WORCESTER Wolves failed to hit the bullseye when they lost 101-82 in their National Basketball League Division One clash at Derbyshire Arrows.

Wolves travelled to last year's double champions in fine spirits following two successive home victories.

The game started at breathtaking pace with Ben Livingston scoring two long three pointers and Derbyshire responding through Dave Waite driving strongly to Basket.

The home team then started to utilise their two giants - Benington 6ft 8ins and Marsh 6ft 10ins - to good effect.

Wolves continued to respond offensively as Cooprider and Chiverton found gaps in the Arrows defence.

The opening quarter saw the home team lead 29-25.

In the second quarter Solvason warmed to the challenge scoring seven points in a three minute spell.

Cooprider scored an excellent three-point attempt from the corner that saw the Wolves trailing by only one point at half time 53-52.

The Derbyshire crowd appeared to be anxious, as in previous years few teams have threatened them at home.

When the second half got underway Wolves missed their first six attempts at basket as Derbyshire ruthlessly exploited the Wolves lapse in concentration.

Eventually Solvason managed to score for the visitors but the Arrows had extended their lead to 10 points.

Anderson then scored four of three point efforts as the quarter closed with Wolves only adding 12 points to their total.

Derbyshire had raced into a 83-64 lead and while Wolves could afford to have lean spells in previous league encounters against the champions they were punished.

The final quarter saw Solvason, Livingston and Chiverton lead a mini-revival yet it was all in vain as the Arrows ran out winners 101-82.

Afterwards coach Jimmy Smith said: "In the first half we looked very comfortable offensively against a strong side. We now have to maintain this intensity throughout the whole game."

Player-coach Rick Solvason said: "For long periods Derbyshire were under pressure. At the club we know we are making progress and a top four finish is our target."

Top scorers were: Solvason 25; Livingston 16.

On Saturday the Wolves are at home against Black County Bears.

Wolves now drop to fifth place and a win against their local rivals is vital.

A large crowd is expected and fans are encouraged to arrive by 6.40pm to guarantee a seat.
