A home is being sought for a piece of Malvern's military and sporting history.

A sporting shield dating from the 1940s has been handed to the Malvern branch of the Royal Engineers Association.

The shield was originally awarded to the 1st Training Regiment of the Royal Engineers, stationed at Malvern's former Merebrook camp during the 1940s and 50s.

It bears the names of numerous league winners from 1945 to 1958 and was presented by the Malvern and District Amateur Football League.

Association member Basil Twist said the trophy was an important piece of military history and needed an appropriate home.

"It's a piece of Malvern's history so should be on display," he said. "We're looking for any suggestions."

The association is also hoping to find out more about the trophy's history.

Mr Twist himself spent two years at Meerbrook, near the Hanley crossroads, but says he cannot remember the football tournament.

"Merebrook was in Malvern for 12 years, so there must be someone who remembers it.

"We think it's important and we'd like to know more about it."

Mr Twist was handed the shield while at a conference in Lichfield.

"It was in a box of old shields and trophies sent up from Aldershot, where the 1st Training Regiment moved to from Malvern," he explained. "I was happy to have it."

Anyone with information or a place to house the trophy should contact Mr Twist on 01684 592113.

The Royal Engineers Association, meets at the Cradley Royal British Legion Club on the first Tuesday of every month at 8pm.
